I preceptored for my Maternity nursing clinical
block in nursing school with a great Midwife who I
still get to work with today... when she
encountered a non-nursing newborn she was
fantastic at reassuring the mom.  She would say
"well that's okay, at least s/he's close to you
right now and that's what really matters.  This is
a time for you and him/her to get to know each
other even if s/he doesn't want to nurse right
now."
