Jessica, I would go with your idea of hand expressing into a med cup and  
than drawing it up in a syringe.  If the mom can lean over a little it  helps to 
get those thick drops to fall into the med cup.  
Another approach would be to have the mom pump if she has the type of  
flanges that can be removed from the rest of the pump.  Once she starts to  collect 
a little puddle than stop the pump, leave the flanges against the mom  and 
draw up the colostrum into a syringe.  
Personally, I like the hand expression the best.
