Hi, June: A manatee is also known as a sea cow. It's actually a pretty
ugly ungainly mammal that can be found in Florida coastal waters. It's an
endangered animal with its biggest enemy being outboard boat motors. Some
people think that manatees are what sailors thought were mermaids. I don't
see the connections as mermaids are usually depicted as beautiful half
woman-half fish creatures. Manatees somewhat resemble a hippopotamus.
Using my degree in biology big time lately.
