I am not sure I have understood the question clearly, but here goes...
Is it possible to take a trip with a 2.5 month old baby? Yes. It is
easy. As long as they are in back-facing car seats, they can be nursed
frequently en route and tend to sleep in between feedings.
Is it advisable to take the baby rather than leave him or her? Yes, as
you suggest. I think my guideline would be to encourage mothers and
babies to enjoy each other's company as much as possible, particularly
(though not only) when young and fully-breastfed.

Is it possible to continue breastfeeding after a four-day separation?
You didn't ask this, thank goodness, because I have no idea of the
answer. I would expect it to be difficult.
Is it possible to take baby under a winter coat? Capes work well in this
respect, but my pregnancy coat was roomy enough for two or three, with
all but the first in a sling or carrier.
Have I done this in the U.K. or northern U.S.? I have travelled with
young babies quite extensively in Maine and occasionally in the rest of
New England, but mostly in Canada. At night? Yes, and even in vehicles
with shabby heating systems. The problem is that travelling in cars
precludes warming babies by body temperature and coats, so I was careful
to bundle them.
Interestingly, my son just returned from New Orleans and found it cold
there, probably because he is so accustomed to the excellent furnaces we
northerners have.
But please, you wise women, don't revive that thread on taking babies
out for walks every day, on even the coldest days. I have experimented,
and my children are healthier when we use good judgment and appreciate
the irony of life: if Naomi wants to wear her snowsuit, we stay inside.
So far, we are waiting for her cooperation to urge caution. LOL
Jo-Anne, pretty sure this isn't helpful, so inviting Ellen to correspond
-- not that it will be clearer, but because I always like to chat with
Ellen. :-)
