Some of the issues here is if the doctor is sure that the medication
that he wants to prescribe:
1- is really contraindicated in bf
2- is really the one the mother needs. There are often several possibilities worth trying, even
if we know that different people react to different drugs.
So few doctors understand why anyone would want to nurse
such an "old" baby. I think that in depressed women they just see this
wanting to continue breastfeeding as yet another symptom of the mother's
ill health rather than what it really is - a symptom of her health.

I have had several mothers turn to me for information about this
problem. There is a lot in the Lactnet archives and more in the medical
literature. It helps to share some of this information with the women
involved. Perhaps it will then get to the doctor as well. One mother
told me that she was so glad to know that the problem is being discussed
and addressed in various places- her doctor had made her feel as if she
was the only "nut" who would not wean to take the meds.
