I may be a bit late with this answer, I'm behind reading.
I actually had these same symptoms with my first and it turned out to be
my let down!  It was very uncomfortable and unpleasant and if a LLLL
hadn't assured me that it wouldn't last the entire time I nursed, I
might well have weaned because of it.  If I remember correctly, it did
take about 6 weeks before that "itchy, prickly, ants in the pants"
sensation went away.  Of course, with your mom it might be something
else all together, but your description sure brought back memories!
