Thank you for sharing your success story Nikki. I am going today to lead a
group discussion on "sleeping through the night" at our mom's gathering.
Many of the mothers are teens who start out so motivated to breastfeed,
then get derailed and demoralized. You recharged my batteries!
A related item, I have been addicted to the cafepress link ever since it
was posted here. One of the images I took a second look at was a picture
of two mothers. One is breastfeeding and one is bottlefeeding. The caption
says, "Motherhood is not a competition." You can get a t-shirt, messenger
bag, sticker, or mousepad with this on it. Sometimes the message to
encourage breastfeeding does get interpreted as criticising a mother who
chooses to bottlefeed. I try to remind a mother that I am giving her just
facts to consider when making a decision, and that I will give her
the "breastfeeding side" of the arguement. It can be frustrating when a
mother takes her negative feelings out on the LC, and makes a complaint,
but the fact that a similar approach is well-received by the next person
makes the case that it isn't the LC or her manner or method. Some women
just are not ready to take personal responsibility for decsions that they
know are not in their or their baby's best interest. We can't change that.
It also is important to remember that there are many bottlefeeding mothers
out there who desperately wish they were breastfeeding, but it didn't work
for them, for whatever reason.
