The thing I keep thinking about in this whole debate - as I babysit my
newest cousin while his mom is at work - is what about the thumbsuckers?  My
cousin sucks his thumb, when he is sleeping you can watch him come into a
lighter sleep state, move his head around as he brings up his hand and
starts sucking his thumb again.  Then he will fall back into a deeper state
of sleep.  Isn't this what the whole pacifier thing is supposed to do - keep
babies from sleeping too deeply (like a breastfed baby near his mother's
breast will do).  I know part of his arousal is the fact that the thumb is
out of his mouth, like babies will do when they realize the breast is out of
their mouth.

But of course we can't encourage thumbsucking - who would make any money
then?
