I don't think that we here in Australia are quite so technologically
inclined,we still tend to encourage hand expression as the first method of
pumping why waste money which there is something you can use for free
first.We do recommend electric pumps or hand pumps but this is mainly to
those mothers who need to express long term(with premmie babies or those
that end up in ICN /SCN and are unable to be put to the breast for whatever
reason).
I always suggest to any mum whether she has a term baby or one that is in
the nursery that if she needs to express for any reason to freeze the
EBM,she may need it at some stage.Although we did have to throw some frozen
EBM out the other day at work when the baby was only 14 days old as mother
has an over abdundant supply and was going to be bringing in fresh milk
every second day.She already had a freezer draw full of specimen jars and
lily pots(hold about 150mls) plus she would be putting EBM into her own
freezer until we had used up what was on the unit
