It's marvellous that your client is considering relactating for her two
year old who has had so many health issues since she was weaned at 10
months.

I have worked with a few clients who have done this, one in particular in
similar circumstances where the baby was found to have a primary immune
deficiency. The mother relactated 5 months after weaning, and then again
about a year after weaning a second time (when he was nearly two years
old). Both times, receiving breastmilk improved the child's health. Each
time the mom was eventually able to make about 400ml in each 24 hours,
though she was not able to persuade the child to breastfeed. Still, the
method of delivery is not as important as the fact that the child is
receiving the breastmilk. She started off with hand-expression and used
sulpiride as a galactogogue (on prescription, 50 mg three times a day).
Within days she produced drops of breastmilk and was able to increase the
quantity by expressing 8 times in 24 hours, moving to a pump when the
quantity of milk produced reached about 30 ml each session. My best wishes
- this _can_ be done. My experience is that using a galactogogue gives
quicker results, but is not absolutely essential in order to relactate.

I have a client that breastfed her now 2 year old for 10 months. Starting
at one year Old this child has had many medical issues including digestive,
sleep, viruses and many others. She is thinking of re Lactation to possibly
help with some of these issues. Can anyone tell me if they had any
experience with this to help with a childs medical issues? Can anyone point
me to any research on this subject ? Thanks so much for any input!
