I have been reading the different posts on hand extraction and pumps. You 
may remember that I live in Argentina. Pumps are almost non-existent here 
and very few maternity hospitals have them. The only rental services that I 
am aware of are the one run directly by Medela in Buenos Aires and a few 
others run by LLL Leaders in other cities (we have a rental program of 
donated pumps, one of them was received from someone in Lactnet whose 
generosity we will always appreciate).

But very few mothers have access to a double breast pump. Most mothers use 
hand operated milk extractors, such as the "syringe type" extractors. And 
many others use hand extraction. I have said here before that I have seen 
mothers of preemies that could not come to breast maintain milk production 
for their babies with hand extraction. I have also seen mothers that could 
not do it. Would their milk production have been saved with a double pump? 
Maybe. The engineer in me thinks that it would. But I have also seen so 
many milk supplies maintained with hand extraction that I am no longer 
hesitant to teach it and tell mothers that they can do it, it is easy and 
it works.

Somebody mentioned that the widespread use of breastpumps in the US may be 
due to the inclination to view everything sophisticated and technological 
as better. I dare to say (and I say this with all due respect and expect no 
one feels offended) that it may also have to do with the reason why 
breastfeeding in public is still so controversial. Breasts are handled as 
little a possible and if necessary, in the most detached and clinical 
manner possible (with a machine).

I would like to have access to the three techniques mentioned by Nikki Lee. 
We teach Chele Marmet's technique only.
