Just a personal note on this topic. I was told by my midwife to stop bf my
2 1/2 yr. old daughter when I was 6 months preg. with my son because every
time I nursed it brought on contractions. I did wean cold turkey, and it
was hard for both of us. When I got pg. with #3, my midwife wanted me to
wean bc of my history. I waited a few weeks until my son's 3rd birthday,
and we had a "weaning party." He was ready to wean, and it was a good
experience. When I got pg. with #4, my midwife (a different one) had no
problem with my continuing to nurse. Here I am at almost 41 wks. trying
desperately to bring on contractions that will get me somewhere (I've had
almost 2 wks. worth of off and on timable, increasingly intense
contractions, but not REAL labor yet). I agree with Jan Barger that the
amt. of oxytocin released by nursing really isn't sufficient in most cases
to bring on labor. All the research I have seen on this topic seems to
agree that nursing does not cause any harm to the pregnancy. I wish it
WOULD bring on labor! But it doesn't!
Just my 2 cents worth.
