A newborn in our pediatric office has been diagnosed with Grave's Disease by
the Pediatric Endocrinogist. The mother had hyperthyroid and was on PTU
during pregnancy and was taken off PTU at delivery. Endocrinogist told
mother to pump and dump for two weeks. PTU is AAP compatible with
breastfeeding.?????Why does the mother have to pump and dump. The
Pediatrician I work for is not sure why baby can't go ahead and breastfeed.
But, he doesn't want to over ride the endocrinogist. We speculate that the
endocrinogist didn't want any thyroid hormones from mother's milk to color
diagnostic test or possibly he wanted to make sure the PTU was out of
mother's system????????Does anyone have any experience or information about
newborn's with Grave's Disease? Mother is pumping (but not dumping/saving
milk for possible later use) and anxious to put baby to breast.
