Hello all,

Does anyone know the average weight/amount of a normal newborn's (2 wks
old)wet/soiled diaper (minus the diaper)?

I have a mom who's baby was weighed at his 2 wk check, and had "lost" 4 oz.
(BW: 8'8; DSCHRG: 8'1; 1 wk: 8'8) So Dr. had mom pump to "check her milk
supply." When mom yeilded 2 ounces, Ped said, (not exact quote here, but
pretty close): "You should be able to get atleast 3 oz, so atleast now we
know it's a low milk supply issue." He then said to suppl. after every
breastfeeding.

I told her about the problem w/ different scales, and I told her about the
pump not being a trustworthy assessment of the milk supply. I also mentioned
that the 4 oz weight loss (if it was even a factual loss and the scale was
not misleading) that it *could* have been due to loaded bowels before being
weighed the last time, and just emptied bowls before the 2nd weighing. What
I want to know, it how many oz is generally excreted?

This Ped has this mom very stressed out--wondering if most professionals
consider different scales and difference in fullness of bowels/kidneys
before determining wieght lost in just one vist? Wondering also why Dr. did
not factor in that baby is having great output (6-8 quite wet, and atleast 2
BM's per day).

Sleepy baby, but she is waking him every 2 hours until he is weighed again
on Monday.

Thank you,

Megan
