Subject: inservice for lay midwives

I will be doing a lactation update in a conference coming up for lay
midwives, who are certified to do home births in Arkansas. I have been told
that there is no need to cover basics but they would like an update on
recent information and research. What topics would you cover and what
sources do you recommend for this? I always have a hard time narrowing it
down and try to do too much. So I thought it would be useful to hear other
people's thoughts on what important topics to cover. Thanks.

Hi Lucy, I've taken classes from lactation consultants throughout the years
and, even though I think I know it all going in, I have always come away
with new ideas and knowledge at the end of the presentations. I would cover
basic things---they may pretend they know it all but it's always nice to
hear basics from a different voice and there might be some small gem that
makes a difference.

One class I took, the LC referred to the packaged stuff as "crap in a can"
instead of the "f" word. Boy, did that stick with me. She also had a
plastic baby bottle in front of each attendee with diluted apple juice. We
were to drink it before the lunch break. I found out that drinking from a
bottle is darned hard work---didn't know that. She told us about how
insidious the "f" manufacturers advertising was in her hosp and how she
would go around every a.m. and find the pens, cups, tape measures, etc with
the "f" advertising and put them all in the garbage. After that workshop, I
really respected what LCs are up against and how courageous they are. I
think it would be great to include some of the Diane Wiesinger stuff about
other mammal species, too, if you're comfortable with that. Perhaps a short
video on basic positioning like this one;

Bottom line, make it fun, personal, practical and don't assume the women
there know a lot. Let us know how it goes for you. Love Gloria Lemay,
