Lucy, this has been discussed before on LACTNET.  Since milk and the  breast 
are not sterile, sterilizing all the pump parts does not make  sense.  This is 
a clean process.  The Human  Milk Bank states the process is clean not 
sterile.
This mom who had a mastitis.  What were the circumstances around  it?  Was it 
truly a mastitis or an inflammation?
The pump manufactures state to sterilize first to protect themselves from  
litigation not based on research.
