Not sure about the banned part but our large teaching hospital stopped using it and took it off the formulary several years ago, and for good reasons. It has to be the worst synthetic opioid ever!

Subject: Re: Stadol

Not aware of Demerol being "banned in the US" or I don't think it would be in our hospital. Would be happy to see it not used with our moms, though!

OBs have been presented with article from ACOG, LACTMED, Hale's recommendation and having the pharmacist at the meeting to discuss it's hazards but still have 2 hold-outs. I'm not giving up! Next meeting we will be presenting a case study experienced by one of our own nurses post csection on Demerol PCA pump who had an extremely sleepy baby who would not latch after having had a first normal breastfeeding session within an hour and a half after birth! Mom was gestational diabetic. Baby too sleepy to latch after that so she chose to pump at 4 hours of age and got 12 mls! Since that is not something we usually see because we usually practice hand expression vs pumping in the first 12-24 hrs, it is a great example of how much a baby can potentially get the first day of colostrum and it's subsequent effect on the newborn.

I would love to have other "ammunition" I can present that the LACTNET world can suggest!

Thanks
