I 'know' about growth spurts becasue I was told about them during my
training and have read about them in various books.  I can not find anything
about them in either Lawrence (5th ed) or in Riordan and Auerbach (2nd ed)
[hope I am looking in the right place].

In The Breastfeeding Answerbook, growth spurts are mentioned as a way of
boosting supply of milk and are defined as when a baby wants to breastfeed
more frequently.

My question:  how do we know that this increase in frequency of
breastfeeding results in increase in growth???  Does anyone know of any work
on this, or even have anecdotal evidence?  Is it just that the only
culturally appropriate way to justify meeting a baby's increased frequency
of request for feeding at the breast is to think of it in terms of
productive output???
