I just read the article in Pediatrics online edition
(http://www.pediatrics.org/cgi/content/full/111/1/e39) and would like to let
you know that one of the authors works for Peder Møller, who makes cod liver
oil. At the end of the article, under acknowledgments, it says that the
grant support for the study came from, inter alia, the Peder Møller division
of Orkla AS, a large international company based in Norway, with a big share
of the grocery market in Norway and Sweden and looking to expand. You can
learn more about Orkla at www.orkla.com, I just did! They have a policy on
genetically modified foods which shows they know GM is not a big sales
booster here, at least.
Another funding source is the Freia chocolate factories' medical fund.
Freia was bought up by Kraft a few years ago and unless Kraft has been
bought up by Nestle when I wasn't looking, it is not Nestle. Freia
Chocolate was renowned for having one of the first industrial hygiene
programs anywhere; it was a model company for taking care of its employees,
and the employee cafeteria was decorated with a wall mural painted there, on
commission, by Edvard Munch. Doesn't prove anything about how BF friendly
they are, but I am pleased to be able to buy powder for making chocolate
milk that doesn't come from Nestle.

BTW, I wrote to the contact author, Ingrid Helland, with a couple of
questions about the article. For example, the percentage of women who
smoked was almost twice as high in the control group as in the cod liver oil
group and they don't mention this in their discussion. It may be possible
in such a small study that the differences they observed were partly due to
the effects of smoking.

Cheers
