Pamela I agree that women do not have to massage their breasts once the baby is latched on well.  However I recommend compression and give clients the link to Dr. Jack Newsman`s video clips when we have a baby who falls asleep very quickly at the breast.  These babies are often not gaining weight and it is very hard to get a sleepy baby to continue feeding.  How many times can we change his nappy, remove clothing or wash his face to get him awake?
In those cases, when we see that the baby is almost asleep and sucking very slowly if at all, compression does wonders.  It sends a surge of milk down to the nipple and immediately I see the baby swallowing and continuing to feed.  It also works well when breasts are engorged and the milk is not released easily causing frustration to the baby.
There is a time and place for everything.  I do not recommend continuous massage or compression if the baby is feeding well.  Once the baby has latched on and is in a good position, I advise mothers to sit back and relax well supported by cushions at the back, elbows and making sure the baby is at the right height against her body. She then does not have to support the baby`s weight.
