Kristen...I fear you have opened up a can of worms! Stand back, stand back,
they might actually bite! ;~>

All joking aside, I wanted to say that I completely and totally agree with you,
even though I don't have a degree in ANYTHING. I got my IBCLC fair and
square also, but I agree with you that there are huge gaps in this 'profession'
and not enough standards.

I do not want to see a limiting of practice, but rather an opening, based on
LC's being a valuable and stand-alone member of a woman's health care
team. We will never do everything we can do unless we are degreed and
licensed - until then, IBCLC is just an add-on for other hcp's or an after-
thought when others can't help.

I know making this degreed and licensed will also open up other challenges,
like it has for midwifery practice here in Canada, but...I still believe it would be
better than what we have and what we can do now.

And, I am totally willing to do what it takes to get a degree in human
lactation, as long as I know there is an income and a guarantee of practice at
the end of the tunnel.

Matter of fact, the research project I am currently working on with a second
year nursing student is actually Masters-level work. Only, my co-researcher
has to get her BSc before she can get her Masters; and me? Gosh...I
dunno...I'm doing the project anyway, but I sure wish I were doing it as part
of a higher-education goal.

I'm open to ideas if anyone has any!

Blessings.
