Spoke w/ a mom today. Baby is 5 1/2 weeks old. Bf going great. Baby has
had a diaper rash almost since birth, has tried 4 different scripts. Rash
is red splotches and almost scabs, does not extend much to buttocks (verbal
per mom). No red rectal ring, no eczema, no signs or symptoms of yeast in
mom or baby's mouth. Pedi and dermatologist do not think it is yeast.
Baby is stooling frequently (normal yellow seedy, but baby will go just a
little, get cleaned and go just a little again) and this is aggrivating
rash. Mom has OALD and is already doing all OALD treatments (reclining,
one BR feedings, expressing off 1st oz, etc). Now Pedi and Derm are
telling her to stop BF. She doesn't want to, she loves nursing and it is
going great. I saw one old post in archieves about possible zinc
deficiency, so I passed that to mom. Recommended acidophillus. Any other
thoughts on stooling frequency (I know it is not unheard of for babies to
go this much) or what she might be able to do? Thanks, Mandy Frost, MS,
RD, IBCLC
