Hi barbara,
At my old Birth Center job, I also used to find American Baby publications
lying around. I finally banned them from the facility b/c they were so full
of formula and bottle ads, not to mention rife with poor info on bfdg like
you have described. I wrote to them a number of times, they published my
letters, but apparently haven't cleaned up their act. Maybe if enough
facilities threaten to stop distributing them....

Subject: Lucas film from Avent and other media questionables

Susan,

I saw the Avent film and was very skeptical; it seemed suspicious as in paid
to advertise and endorse which always makes me leary. I've had moms perhaps
start with A**** I*** to encourage letdown and then switch to double
electric
when it's difficult to get much milk but like you wouldn't feel comfortable
recommending a hand pump for entire pumping sessions, esp when exclusive
pumping necessary.

Another media, advertising suspect that had me scratching my head and
audibly
sighing: birth center where I teach and run a support group has all these
"freebie" magazines that overflow with misinformation and elevate my BP
dangerously. If anyone has access to "first year of parenting" put out by
American Baby, and toy co. and disposable diaper co., please take a look. I
found at least four glaring errors re BF alone and I was just browsing,
waiting for group moms to arrive. I plan to write because, while some info
just goes against baby empathic care, once again stooling is not mentioned
as
sign baby "getting enough," just wets. (I see this repeatedly in mainstream
mags which I reluctantly read to know what I'm up against-often these
unfortunately are quotes from HCP's.) So if you're in the mood for letter
writing....
