Hi Jennifer,
Even if tongue tied babies do fine with breastfeeding, they still might
have other problems from the failure of proper development of the oral
cavity. My son had a tongue tie, we had a hard time getting started
breastfeeding, but managed for 22 mos. He fell off the breast a lot,
gained well. Had speech problems, severe sleep apnea in middle
childhood, and a narrow palate which gave him severe crowding of his
permanent teeth (his incisors were overlapping!). We had his frenulum
clipped when he was 10, took out his tonsils to enlarge his airway, and
did a maxillary expansion and orthodontia to bring the palate down.
Fixed the speech and the apnea and his bite. My son's school
performance and muscle tone increased dramatically. Tongue function is
still lousy, wish I had known when he was a baby, before his brain
solidified the range of motion for his tongue...
Brian Palmer gave me a lot of information when I was going through all
this, and recommended the course of treatment. I have been
corresponding with him ever since, and we have exchanged clinical
photos. (Thanks, Brian!) His presentation on tongue tie is a must-read
for all health care professionals, in my opinion.

My own experience with my now 16 year old and what I have observed with
my clients leads me to encourage treatment if tongue mobility is
restricted by the frenulum. Alison Hazelbakers ATLFF is a good starting
point for determining if there is restriction.
