I came real close to having a hysterectomy after my son was born. The
doctors told me I would be able to take hormone replacement AND nurse....I
will see if I can find further research on it. (I have Dr. Hale's book ,
but it is at my office).

Subject: Alesse/estrogen/adopting mother

Help please. Today a 41 year old woman came to me for an SNS and a pump. She
hopes to induce a lactation for a baby she will be getting in a few days who
will be about 2 weeks old. She did not come to me for a consult today, but
during the course of conversation I discovered that she went through a
premature menopause and has been on Alesse for 3 or 4 years as an estrogen
replacement. I said I would ask wiser ones about the possible ramifications
for inducing a lactation while on this drug. Might there be harm to baby
if, indeed, milk is produced, consequences to her if she goes off suddenly,
and what alternatives might she explore, if necessary. Thank you for any
expert advice.

Anne Grider, IBCLC
