In response to Betty's post:
You don't mention if the baby received bottles in the hospital. It
sounds like nipple confusion to me. I would take away all bottles and
teach the parents finger or cup feeding,(sounds like your trying this
already). She needs to pump frequently and try offering the breast when
the baby is in a light sleep or just waking. If the baby still refuses,
I would try a nipple shield (with a lot of lactation assist). It may
only take 24 hours to get baby to latch and wean off the shield. You
mention the baby latched a few times prior to the milk coming in. Could
this be a strong let-down reflex? If so, positioning the baby so he is
more face down (mom leaning back), so excess milk can flow out of his
mouth. Most of all, lots of encouragement for the parents to hang in
there through this is important. Good luck, I've run into this before
and if the mom hangs in, it will resolve.
