Hello!
I have recently went to school to watch "THE VIDEO" with my daughter who is
in the 4th grade regarding Menstruation.
The video "I Got It" was shown, a very fine video to show regarding that but
the video made no attempt to touch on developing breasts just showed lacey
bras I felt that was putting a sexual outlook on growing breasts. I really
felt when the school nurse was explaining what the female anatomy was and
did explaining that the uterus was for holding the unborn child if the egg
had been fertilized but no discussion on how breasts grew and what their
purpose later on.
The girls had questions on how the egg becomes fertilized, what is sperm,
where does it come from etc.
I just feel like they could do a better job at explaining the whole picture
of puberty. I was the only mother who attending.
I just feel strongly that they missed a very good opportunity to address
breastfeeding or at least letting the truth about what breasts are really
for!!
Some of the girls have no clue what breasts are for or what they can do,
besides filling lacey bras.
I would have to laugh when I would take my newborn who was a week old to
Kindergarten and he would fuss and many of the girls were very willing to
find that bottle for him in the backpack!! I would have to laugh and put
him in the sling and he would nurse as we carried on our activities. The
teacher who also was a breastfeeding mom just giggled and told the girls
that he was fed by mommy, the girls were surprised but never asked really
anymore questions. I never really thought on how they thought I was feeding
him.

I really want to write a letter but have no idea where to start or how far
to go.
Do I start with the school nurse or go the the administration who o.k.s the
videos?? I can only wonder what the 5th and 6th grades videos are about.
When I was in school the only way we learned about the facts of life were at
home which was very nil or in a child development or parenting class maybe
it was touched on in Health Class, but not in much detail.
Please send me any ideas or thoughts.
