After years of menorrhagia, I enjoyed the reprieve that came with my first
pregnancy.

son #1 nursed 2 ½ years, and I didn’t resume menstruation until he was 19 or
20 months old. I got pregnant again on my second cycle, knowing which day I
ovulated. After son #2 (who nursed 2 years), I went at least 20-21 months
without an obvious period, because less than 2 years later I was pregnant
with son #3 but had not “officially” resumed (a regular) cycle, which led to
the need for several ultrasounds for viability before we could move on to
“dating” ultrasounds. And it turned out I was very early pregnant. (the
newly sore nipples and nausea when #2 was nursing were what clued me in J)

Never worried about (in fact, really ENJOYED) not having my period “yet”…
never checked prolactin levels (but no history of PCOS or other hormonal
imbalances either), because I knew lactational amenorrhea was nature’s
perfect family spacing, and my body was doing what it was supposed to do,
when it was supposed to do it.

son #3 nursed a little over 3 years, but menstruation resumed very early
(did my body know my husband had gotten a vasectomy?) and with such a
vengeance (the dysfunctional uterine bleeding that I’d had before pregnancy
and/or breastfeeding) that after being on a combination of depo-provera AND
continuous oral contraceptives (with a snipped husband!?! How crazy is
that?) I’d had a hysterectomy by they time Lachlan was 4. The pathology on
my uterus showed adenomyometritis.
