Yes, this *outraged* me this morning. Both Reuters and Associated Press are
carrying versions of this item this morning. AP has a quote from Dr.
McKenna. However, CNN had picked up the Reuters item already and had it up
in the health section of their web site. I emailed their editor with the
suggestion that they might as well have headlined their item "CPSC helps
crib manufacturers sell product" and I gave them McKenna's quote from the AP
story and suggested they do a follow-up.

Let's hope it's the AP version of the story that makes it into tomorrow's
newspapers. Here's the portion of the AP story that is counterpoint to the
CPSC campaign:

>
> The agency has previously warned parents against sleeping in bed with their
> babies.
>
> James McKenna, director of the Mother-Baby Behavioral Sleep Lab at the
> University of Notre Dame, said that recommendation is simplistic and "ignores
> human behavior."
>
> He said many mothers sleep safely with their babies while breast-feeding and
> have saved their babies' lives by being aware of their children even while
> sleeping. McKenna said the government statistics include cases of extreme
> neglect that do not represent most parents.
