When I have a mom who's probably going to be doing some grieving, sometimes I find it helpful to talk about breastfeeding here in the US as being on a continuum. At one end is many of us Lactnuts who never give a bottle. At the other end are bottlefeeding moms - I guess those who just prop them so there's no person-to-person contact! Most people are somewhere else on that continuum. They may give an occasional bottle with mom's own. They may always give all breastmilk in a bottle. They may mostly breastfeed but give an occasional bottle of artificial formula. Etc, etc.
Our job is to help mom get as close as she can - given the circumstances she is in - to the goals she has set for herself and her baby. And to validate the mom's feelings of grief.
