Neil Campbell, an Australian MD, gave a standing ovation talk at ILCA in the
early nineties on "Breastmilk feeding of critically ill babies." Among his
many fascinating stories was the one about the baby w/ severe cellulitis (I
think it was) in one leg. *Any* touch or movement was excruciating to him.
His parents were advised that they had 2 choices: deep, deep sedation on a
respirator to allow for several days of initial healing, or 24-hour-a-day
holding and nursing, with much lighter sedation. They opted for the
holding, which served just as well and allowed for far less medication.
