I work for a major chain of pharmacies and I realized recently that they
rent out the same brand of electric breastpump as I own (I have
Ameda/Hollister Purely Yours; they obviously have the hospital grade model
of that brand). I decided to take the bull by the horns and I went in to
see my boss last night and asked if I could use a breastpump while I was on
shift. I explained I have all the tubing for that brand and everything, and
that *obviously* I understand if all their pumps (I think they have 5 or 7
or so?) are rented out I would be out of luck, but I said it would help me
lug fewer things into work for my shifts to not have to bring my own pump (I
didn't mention I've been using my small Avent hand pump instead of bringing
in my electric pump... ;-)). My boss thought about it for a minute and
said he didn't see why not. He said grab one and take it upstairs and find
a convenient place to leave it until I no longer need it. I said I don't
need it all the time; I mean I hardly work 40 hours a week (I work between
13 and 16 hours a week on average, two weekend shifts of 8 and/or 5
hours...). But he said as long as they know it's upstairs and where to find
it in case it needs to be rented out, then it doesn't matter. :-) So that
was a posiitive experience there...ask and ye shall perhaps not receive but
really, is he likely to fire me for just asking? ;-)
Also, my "baby" is going to be a year in one week. My combined
maternity/parental leave of 1 year (here in Canada) just ended officially on
august 1st, but my boss didn't make any comments about "how old" he is and
whether I "needed" the pump. Interestingly, another co-worker whose son is
21 months who is pretty much weaned already using "don't offer, don't
refuse" combined with "refuse sometimes..." DID ask me why on earth I was
pumping still if DS is a year old "and should be eating solids". I said
usually I leave two 2 oz bottles of milk for him when I go on an 8 hour
shift (which considering I actually am at work for 8.5 hours, paid for 8
what with one unpaid 1/2 hour break in the mix AND I live 45 min. from work,
adding another hour and a half almost in travel time, means I'm away for
about 10 hours from Tristan, twice a week if I work the two 8.5 hr shifts)
and he rarely drinks more than 1 oz in all that time. He *does* eat,
voraciously, and doesn't really like the pumped milk obviously. He eats
well, and drinks water, and all is fine mostly. But I said to my co-worker
I do it for myself...I still get full since when I am home he nurses much
more often than the amount I pump at work and I also am prone to plugged
ducts. I had the beginning of one just last weekend. Well, the co-worker
started spouting off about how that isn't normal and that shouldn't be
happening anymore yada yada yada. I just said I've always been prone to
them, it's now I'm made. I said maybe I have twists in my milk ducts. ;-)

Anyhow, I was impressed with my boss and his response, it was actually more
than I hoped for. :-)
