Subject: Fw: Dairy intolerance/mastitis

Hi all,
I have been talking with a woman 14 weeks pregnant with her second baby.
With her first child, now 14 months old, she experienced recurrent
mastitis.
The mastitis was always unilateral and she had it in different areas of
both
breasts, sometimes only a matter of hours in between one bout clearing up
and the next one beginning. She persevered with b/f for 2 months or so
before switching to formula (presumably a cow's milk formula) This baby
subsequently developed excema as well as reflux which have both now cleared
up.
This woman tells me that she consumes "a lot" of dairy, particularly cream
and yoghurt - she lives on a dairy farm! At present she is craving sour
cream and eating lots of it.
She has currently developed a tender lump on one breast just outside the
areola. This is one of the areas where she previously experienced
mastitis.
At present it is not inflamed and there are no other symptoms of mastitis.
I was wondering if anyone knows of a connection between dairy intake and
mastitis?

Since writing this first message I have read in Maureen Minchin's book,
"Food for Thought", that recurrent unexplained mastitis can be linked to a
food intolerance/allergy.

I imagine that the consumption of large amounts of dairy
products
would increase the fat content of the milk, making it "thicker" and thus
making the breasts more susceptable to blocked ducts, thereby increasing
the
likelihood of mastitis.
The other matters which she mentioned were that she had some sort of
infection (she thinks blood infection) during her last pregnancy which was
treated in hospital. Prior to her first pregnancy she had a bony infection
in her ankle following an injury, which took 2 years to clear up.
She is allergic to Penicillin and is unsure what she was treated with for
her previous bouts of mastitis. She also said that her first child was not
a strong "sucker".
I'm wondering if there is a pathogen in her system, which has never cleared
completely and is the cause of all these infections.
I have asked her to find out what the pathogens were in both of these
previous infections to see if they could be related to the recurrent
mastitis.
I have been searching the archives, but haven't found anything that links
dairy intolerance with mastitis I've also been frustrated with my computer
constantly "freezing" then having to start all over again!!
Any help would be appreciated. I want to gather as much information as I
can
before I meet with this woman. Could you please forward responses directly
to me as well as to the list?
Thank you
Joy
