I've been doing breasts and babies, in a professional/support capacity, for
going on 25 years now. Remember when we *all* had thrush? Then we *all*
had refluxy babies. Now we *all* have tongue-tie, which we howl is either
under-diagnosed, or over-diagnosed, or missed altogether.

I absolutely agree that we have "maladies du jour." And that's OK ... it
means we are sharing our professional experiences, reading research,
talking to one another, and recognizing how modern day birth/BFg practices
sometimes collide with age-old biology and mammalian tendencies. That is
old news.

What has changed is the reach of the Internet. Parents are gabbing, and
offering even ill-informed opinion, just as they have done for millenia,
over the proverbial picket fence. 'Cept now they can converse with
millions of people.

And I also think social media platforms bring out ... um ... the worst in
us (as parents; as professionals) when we have discourse about
differences-of-opinion. But even that is not new. Many of us long-time
Lactnetters know of *many* participants who dropped their subscriptions
because of the public and private flaming they'd get for offering an
unpopular view.

I believe any and every parent who gets that nagging sense that
BFg-just-ain't-right deserves a good old-fashioned lactation consultation.
Full-on assessment and history of the parent, and baby, and a
feeding-at-breast, with a pre- and post-weight to measure milk transfer.
(And for those of you in practice settings where the scale is not
customarily-used ... I know you are out there, and I know the IBLCE Scope
of Practice allows us to co-exist.)

And I believe ankyloglossia (oh wait -- it's tethered oral tissues, right?)
impacts BFg. And I believe some people can assess tongue function better
than others. And I believe some clinicians can treat ties, and do a good
job of it, while others do not. And I believe that any family with feeding
issues deserves ... Come on, Everyone! Join me! ... "evidence-based
information and support so they can make an informed decision about the
healthcare of the parent, and the child, in consultation with the primary
healthcare provider."
