I am working with a mother who needs to have a toenail removed because
of very painful, repeating ingrown nails.  She periodically has had them
cut, but has reached the point where she and her podiatrist feel it is
best just to get rid of the nail and with it any future problems.  The
concern is that the doc plans to apply phenol (carbolic acid) to the
area and feels that it might get into her milk.  She has a large
stockpile of expressed milk and is willing to pump, dump, and give EBM
for a time if necessary.  She works out of the home and baby is
"comfortable" with taking bottles.
My first thought was that it seems remote to think that something
applied externally can get into the milk in significant quantities, but
realize that that isn't a hard and fast guideline.  Toxins absorbed
through the skin can have systemic effects.
I have checked my references under both "phenol" and "carbolic acid" and
find nothing.
