Please help ASAP.  I had a young client call today with a one month old
baby that pediatrician has diagnosed as lactose intolerant.  I asked her
how the diagnosis had been reached.  This is her story with her
permission.  Baby was vomiting with breastfeeding.  Mom went off all
dairy for one week with no improvement.  Ped. took baby off breast and
put on lactose free ABM.  Baby did fine.  Then put baby back to breast
with vomiting again.  Baby back to lactose free ABM and now on soy
formula without problems.  Mom really wants baby to have breastmilk.  Ped
suggested that she pump BM and add Lact-Aid drops to EBM and let sit in
milk for 24 hours before feeding it to the baby.  She asked about just
giving the baby the drops and then breastfeeding, but ped said "no"-the
other is the only protocol she/he's comfortable with.  Ped said not sure
of what effect Lact-Aid drops would have on baby.  I told mom I'd put
this out on lacnet to see what others can tell me.  Dr. Hale or Dr. Jack
or anyone else have some words of wisdom.   Lactnet is always such a
wonderful source of information.  I plan on checking the archives also,
but have never seen this discussed before.  Thanks in advance-you're all
wonderful!
