Just thought I would make a few suggestions that might help that mom, from
what I learned after adopting my daughter, Julia. Julia was born full-term,
of very large birth parents, but was only nine pounds when I got her, at six
months old. The foster mom she had been with for the previous 10 weeks had
gotten a little more weight on her by feeding her commercial baby food, but
since so much of that is water, I changed her diet, to include more calorie
dense foods. I was also in a situation of having social workers and
physicians watching everything I did with Julia, and I was most anxious to
put an end to that situation, as I am certain this other mom is, too!

Two fresh foods that I fed her alot of were banana and avocado, since those
are much higher in fat than most fruits. I also gave her a tablespoon of
heavy whipping cream, each day, usually by giving her one teaspoon three
times a day. One good way to do this was to add the cream to some oatmeal
or millet cereal. I also gave her a little bit of molasses each day, either
mixed with cereal or added to her bottles (this was before I figured out how
to get her to take the breast).

Another thing I did with Julia was to try to feed real often. Julia
couldn't keep more than a tiny bit down at once, which probably isn't an
issue with this other baby. However, the mom still might want to think
about trying to fit in one extra feeding a day, possibly at night, if the
baby is not all ready feeding at night.

Some people might object to the idea of the small amount of heavy whipping
cream. However, if a baby is in a situation where her ability to continue
breastfeeding is threatened if she doesn't gain some weight, I think it is
reasonable to try something like that. I am assuming that the possibility
of trying to get more hindmilk or having the mom pump and skim off the
richest part of her milk and using that has been discussed. That wasn't an
option for me, with Julia.
