Donna -

Whatever else she does or doesn't do, it's worth remembering that if the
problem
is inadequate tissue, just the action of nursing should, over a period of
months, improve her supply.

I realized belatedly with a mother who never pumped more than an ounce a day
and who quit in discouragement after a couple weeks, that had I encouraged
her the way I'd have encouraged an adoptive mom, they might have continued
to nurse, the relationship would have been salvaged, and the baby would have
continued to get at the very least that ounce a day. And probably more
and more.

Might be worth having a talk w/ the mom about why she wanted to nurse. If
the relationship was a big part of it, boom, she's got that, guaranteed, and
she can put away the pump and the herbs and the whole shebang and nurse
happily for the next 5 years... probably with an increasing supply as she
does so. If she works so hard on supply that she loses the relationship...
then she's lost it all.
