I agree the car seat safety issue is a strong one, and I do not take that
lightly, either. Let's substitute strollers!
Or, we could use the diaper issue. I mentioned to Pam that there was a
mother who was so engrossed with her diapers (at $15 each) that she tried to
convince every mother to use them. She would bring boxes with her to
meetings, pass them around and talk about them endlessly. She would laugh
about "selling so many mothers" to this brand, she felt she should get a
commission.
It got to where mothers almost apologized for using paper diapers, or the
"cheap" prefolds.
Where is it written we have to have the most expensive diaper on our baby's
bottoms?
This woman talks about her pump, endlessly. It's the most expensive brand,
it has this control, and that. And, she went back to work after a few weeks,
because they "just couldn't afford her to stay home." Her reality was, she
needed these expensive diapers, and she needed an expensive pump.
She did a really good job marketing for these companies, because many
mothers confided that they thought she thought they were inferior, because
they had cheaper diapers, or pumps. New moms are impressionable, and they
want to do the right thing for themselves and their babies. If they are led
to believe they MUST have xy and z, they really believe it!

I get your argument here - but - aside from all these issues - the reason
for buying new carseats not used, is that plastics break down and car seats
become less protective and if there has been stress on them (such as in an
accident) they can fail. >>
