Baby's natural use of hands that way seem to be most productive when mom is relaxed back.
But when mom is sitting upright and having to use muscle power to bring baby to breast and keep him there, those natural hand movements have a "pushaway" effect.
I've seen so many moms who say "baby didn't want my breast - he pushed me away!"

=============
The first time I heard the term anti-gravity used in connection with breastfeeding was when Suzanne Colson used it to describe anti-gravity reflexes that aid with latch. My understanding is that these reflexes help the baby orient body positioning and can be elicited by placing a baby prone (ie laid-back positioning). We all have anti-gravity muscles which help us remain upright.
