Our peds wrote us up a great checkoff list to help determine which
babies are at risk for jaundice and need a bili done. It lists the major
risk factors that trigger the testing, and that includes "insufficient
breastfeeding". Now, I have to tell you that I spent a long time looking
for what that would be in the first 24 hours - particularly since our
babes all go to breast within the first one-two hours (no routine
mother-baby separation), we didn't sweat it if the second feed was
during that 20-24 hour cluster.
I ended up with one of Larry Gartner's articles - embedded within there
was four feeds being sufficient in the first 24 hours, then 8-12
thereafter (although I've heard him say that 11 is the magic number to
fend off jaundice).
Does anyone have other numbers with evidence?? (Oh no another study we
need to commission with all our extra cash!)
