The information is evidence based, the analogies that we use may not be.
OTOH, they will be customized to the client/audience we are addressing.

Some years ago I taught anatomy and physiology to nurses from overseas.
Science was usually not their strong suit.  But making comparisons to
cutting up chicken, filtered coffee, doing laundry and other routine
household tasks, gave them a frame of reference for understanding far
more complex concepts.  Reasoning from the familiar to the new, gave
them confidence that they could understand.

Needless to say the same comparisons didn't work teaching the same
subject to first year nursing students, most of whom hadn't done any of
those things and who needed very different analogies.

While I'm very fond of the BestStart adaptation of Linda's belly balls,
I also realize that the comparators (chickpea, cherry and walnut) might
not be as familiar as marbles and ping-pong balls.
