In response to the message about how to make co-sleeping safer:

--avoid potential wedge spaces: there should be less than 2 inches (or more
than 1-2 feet) between the matress and frame or wall/furniture
--avoid smoking: the prevalence of SIDS is higher in co-sleepers who smoke
than those who don't co-sleep in a few studies (and there are a lot of other
reasons for the sake of the parents and the children to give up the smoking,
rather than the the co-sleeping)
--why limit support for co-sleeping to breastfeeding children? Having the
baby in the same room as the parents was associated with a much lower SIDS
rate in one study. While the authors say there was a potential risk of
actually being in the bed, the numbers of bed-sharing cases was too small to
comment reliably about being in the bed vs. in the room based on this study

Best wishes, MaryAnn O'Hara, MD
