Hi, Fiona! Sounds like someone was reading that Fall et al. study
done in England and reported in BMJ. This study continues to
bother me a lot (remember, I do not have a medical background),
but someone on Lactnet (sorry whoever you are - dangers of
skimming :-] ) posted a while ago that the study was flawed
(can't recall more details).
This was a retrospective study of 5000+ men born 1920-30 in
Hertfordshire comparing infant feeding practices (checking home
visitor records) and adult cholesterol levels + mortality from
IHD. In a nutshell, the investigators "found" that if the men had
not been "weaned" by one year, they were at risk to die of heart
disease. Just one of the things that bothered me was the word
"weaning", since I heard from an English doctor that in England
"weaning" means "to start giving solids", not "to cease bfg".
Is this true?
I find this study confusing and would really, really enjoy an in-
depth discussion of the Fall study on Lactnet, especially now
since it seems to be effecting a change (NOT to the better!) of
breastfeeding protocols.

feeding to adult serum cholesterol concentration and death from
