Hi LuAnn,
A posterior tongue tie is a restrictive lingual frenulum that does not
go all the way to the tip of the tongue, but still affects tongue
movements. They are mostly missed by the Hazelbaker scale, which was a
wonderful early attempt to codify diagnosis of tongue tie by looking at
multiple tongue mobility parameters, because most babies with posterior
tongue-tie can raise their tongue to mid-mouth.

Dr. Coryllos and I wrote an article on the issue for the AAP
breastfeeding section newsletter, it is still available online at
http://www.aap.org/breastfeeding/8-27%20Newsletter.pdf
