There are literally hundreds of studies on preterm nutrition, and several
of those address the SGA infant as well, who needs even more nutrition for
some level of catch-up. Yes, I know too rapid catch-up growth is associated
with increased obesity, heart disease, insulin resistance in SGA babies.
Unfortunately too slow growth is associated with decreased neurologic
function.

Please read Chapter 6 and its references of our book: Best Medicine: Human
Milk in the NICU, available from Hale Publishing. There are a few newer
studies if you do a PubMed search.

Dr. Wight,
Thank you for your insight. Where can I find this research on SGA preemies
that you speak of?
The baby that I am seeing was on EBM 24cal while in the NICU, and is still
receiving this supplementation throughout the day. Is this (making EBM into
22 cal or 24 cal by adding Neosure/Enfcare) something that is commonly
practiced in NICU's?

Thanks,
