I have worked with many babies over the years who have slept long periods
of time from very early ages, some in bed with their parents, others in
cribs. I still say that for the most part it is lucky for the parents who
get a solid block of sleep and not necessarily a pathology. In my
experience, sleep is like anything else, there is a nice bell curve and
some babies will fall at each end- those that wake frequently and those
that rouse infrequently. If you look at the Brazelton description of baby
types, on one end of the scale (2.5%) are very sleepy, calm babies, these
babies need to be monitored carefully, but usually grow and thrive just
fine with long periods of sleep at night and waking regularly for feeding
during the day. Just normal variations, IMHO. Cathy Liles
