Hi all,

I am working with a mom whose baby is having trouble getting the tongue to
stay over the bottom gum. It just makes it over but can’t seem to make it
stay there. I’m a little worried that it doesn’t look like it can be an
easy routine clipping. I don’t see any skin/membrane to clip—it’s one wide
solid muscle. Mom has hamburger nipples. Sigh….. And poor baby is
clenching its jaws to boot.

Thanks to hearing Barbara Wilson-Clay recently I think we are getting things
on the right track; and having a very helpful chat with Dr. Brian Palmer a
few months ago didn’t hurt either. :-) Family is on their way to see the
on call ped and the family has asked me to find out a few things. One is…

-they are more than willing to get the frenulum clipped, even if it requires
surgery. But until it actually gets clipped, should she try to put the baby
to breast at all? She has been hand expressing and is finding that very
exhausting and painful to touch her nipples so they are going to pick up a
double automatic pump today. She really wants to put the baby to breast but
of course needs to let her skin heal a little. I think they are looking for
reassurances that if they don’t put the baby to breast until after the
tongue is clipped that breastfeeding can still continue. I know it can, but
I think they want to hear some success stories.

As I recall when I heard Barbara Wilson-Clay, I remember her describing a
mother who did just that. Pumped to give her nipples time to heal and
protect supply/feed baby.

Would love to hear some tongue tie success stories! And any other helpful
thoughts you might have.

Warmly,
Nikki Simmons in Missouri
