I think that sometimes we forget that pump companies are corporations and
their mission is to generate profits. Along the way, they may market some
products that prove helpful to mothers with babies that are trying to
breastfeed, but their goal is to product items that will pass government
muster and then make money for them. If they do marketing research that
shows that they can increase their profits by renting through Babies R Us,
or any other business, then that is what they probably will do. This is not
to discount the lactation consultants that may also be employed by the
company and may be doing their best to make sure that the product is
properly used and hopefully, they will be reading Lactnet and realize that
there is a big problem and may perhaps have some influence on the situation.
But in the end, it is a business, pure and simple. Which is a lesson to be
learned about cozying up to any corporation. In the end, they can do
whatever they want and you really don't have anything to say about it.
Perhaps I will be proved wrong and Medela will pull their pumps and support
their current dealers. But I wouldn't hold my breath.
