I'm convinced that the "tight frenula stretch with time" is one of those
  idle speculations that are just repeated for millenia.  I have looked
for some documentation of this statement, but have found none.

I actually did see my first ever spontaneous rupture of a lingual
frenulum this week, but it did not go nearly far enough, just about 2mm.
  Left a nice white line on the bottom of the tongue, just like a
frenotomy would.  If I had not seen the baby before and after, I would
not have believed it.
